The First Trimester

Being a first time mom, I had no idea what to expect with the first trimester. All of a sudden I had received the news that I was growing a human being and I was thrown into the trenches! The first trimester isn’t meant to be scary! Instead it should be a time of learning how to accept the growing changes with your body and bonding with the baby that you are growing.

Some things I learned with the first trimester are:

  1. You will be tired. This fetus is taking a lot out of you. Some of the biggest changes take place during the first trimester. You may feel like a bus ran over you but it is okay! Take naps, relax, skip out on the gym, you will get more bursts of energy in the 2nd trimester.
  2. Your skin will change. I was so proud of my skin before I found out I was pregnant. I had finally achieved the clear skin I had been lusting after since high school. The minute I was found out I was pregnant, I welcomed breakouts galore. I never changed my skincare routine and all of a sudden, it stopped working. I decided to use masks twice a week to help calm my skin and it was a big change. Listening to my skin from the very beginning really helped me tremendously.
  3. Morning sickness is no joke. I was sick from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed. You can try to push through it and if you can more power to you! I unfortunately had lost 15 pounds in my first trimester. I tried everything they suggested from the sea bands to unisom, nothing would work for me. I listened to my body and if it sounded good, I would eat it even if I know the repercussions from later. Now, with the second pregnancy, there is a medicine called Diclegis that is approved by the FDA for morning sickness. If the symptoms are that bad, talk to your doctor and try and get some relief!!
  4. Your body changes. Depending on your body, changes may be apparent from the very beginning. I started using bio oil from the very beginning to reduce the lines from stretch marks and I managed to stay mark free! I used moisturizer twice a day and made sure to quench my skin, knowing that it would be changing to shapes it had never seen.

The first trimester is a lot of trial and error. You grieve the things that you once could do but it is a very exciting time. You will get to hear your babies heart beat, contemplate the future they will have, and learn to love on something that you haven’t even held in your hands. The connection begins almost instantaneously.
